The deal
What you pay
Find the sale price and what tax does to it
Enter the original price, the discount as either a percentage or a fixed amount off, and the sales tax, GST or VAT rate that applies. The result shows the final total, how much you save (also expressed as a percentage of the original), the price after the discount, and the tax amount on its own. Figures are formatted in your chosen currency from a list of ten, including USD, EUR, GBP, INR and AUD.
The tax handling switch is the part most calculators skip. "Added at checkout" is the North American model: the discount comes off the sticker price, then tax is added to what remains. "Already included" is the model for VAT and GST pricing in the UK, EU, India and Australia, where the shelf price already contains the tax; the calculator discounts the gross price and then shows what portion of the final figure is tax, worked back out at the rate you entered. "No tax" simply disables the field.
Guard rails keep the arithmetic sensible: a percentage discount is capped at 100% and a fixed discount can never exceed the price, so the worst case is an item that is free rather than a negative total. Everything recalculates on each keystroke without leaving your browser.
Frequently asked questions
How do I work out a 25% discount?
Multiply the price by 0.25 to get the saving and subtract it, or multiply by 0.75 to go straight to the sale price. The calculator does this and then applies tax to the result.
Is sales tax charged before or after the discount?
On the discounted price, in almost every jurisdiction. The "Added at checkout" setting does exactly that: discount first, then tax on what remains.
What does "Already included" mean?
It is for prices that already contain VAT or GST. The tax portion of the discounted price is worked back out as price minus price divided by (1 + rate), so a 120 price at 20% VAT contains 20 of tax.
Can I stack two discounts, such as 20% off plus a further 10%?
Not in one pass. Run the first discount, then enter the "Price after discount" figure as the new original price and apply the second. Stacked percentages do not add up to 30% off; 20% then 10% is 28% off.
Does changing the currency convert the amount?
No. The currency only changes the symbol and formatting. Enter the price in the currency you are paying in.
