Estimate what a drive will cost in fuel

Enter the distance, your vehicle's fuel consumption and the price of fuel, and the calculator returns the total fuel cost, the volume of fuel you will burn, the cost per kilometre or mile, and the total distance driven. Set the number of people sharing and it divides the cost evenly per person; switch to "Return trip" and the distance doubles. Costs can be shown in any of ten currencies.

Metric and imperial modes use the measure each region actually quotes. Metric takes litres per 100 km, where a lower number is better, and prices fuel per litre. Imperial takes miles per gallon, where a higher number is better, and prices per gallon. The two need opposite arithmetic (fuel = distance ÷ 100 × L/100km versus fuel = distance ÷ MPG), which is why mixing them up on a napkin produces nonsense.

The figure is fuel only. Tolls, parking, wear and depreciation are outside the calculation, and real consumption varies with speed, load, traffic and weather, so a manufacturer's combined-cycle figure will usually flatter a trip with city traffic, a roof box or a full load. Use the consumption your trip computer reports for a closer answer. Everything is calculated in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the fuel cost of a trip?

Work out the fuel needed, then multiply by the price. In metric that is distance ÷ 100 × litres per 100 km; in imperial it is distance ÷ miles per gallon. A 300 km trip at 7.5 L/100km uses 22.5 litres, which at 1.75 per litre costs 39.38.

Does the imperial mode use US or UK gallons?

It does not distinguish them. Enter the MPG and the price per gallon in the same gallon and the cost is correct either way; mixing a UK MPG figure with a US per-gallon price will be off by about 20%.

Does the per-person figure include the driver?

Yes. "Sharing between" is the total number of people in the car, including whoever is driving. Set it to 1 to see the full cost unsplit.

Does the estimate include tolls or wear and tear?

No. It covers fuel only. Add tolls and parking separately, and if you want the true cost of the drive, a per-kilometre allowance for tyres, servicing and depreciation is typically several times the fuel cost.
