Trim video and audio without re-encoding
Three modes under one tool: Trim Video, Trim Audio and Extract Audio. Load a file, drag the two handles on the timeline to set the start and end (the player seeks to the start point as you drag so you can check the cut), and the readout shows start, end and the resulting duration to a tenth of a second.
Trimming uses FFmpeg's stream copy, which cuts the container without decoding the picture or sound. That is why it is fast and why the output has exactly the same quality and format as the input: an MP4 comes out as an MP4, a WebM as a WebM. The trade-off is that cuts land on the nearest keyframe, so the start of a video clip can be a fraction of a second earlier than the handle. Video jobs time out after 60 seconds, which in practice means very large files should be cut into shorter clips. The audio trimmer copies the stream directly and saves as MP3, so it is built for MP3 input.
FFmpeg itself is compiled to WebAssembly and fetched from a CDN when the tab opens; once it has loaded, the media file is read and written entirely in your browser's memory and never uploaded. Give the output a filename and download it when the preview looks right.
Frequently asked questions
Does trimming reduce the quality?
No. The video and audio streams are copied, not re-encoded, so the clip has the same resolution, bitrate and codec as the file you loaded.
Is there a file size limit?
There is no fixed limit, but the whole file is held in browser memory and video processing stops after 60 seconds. Multi-gigabyte files are better cut into shorter pieces first.
Why does my clip start slightly before the point I chose?
Stream copy can only cut at keyframes. The clip starts at the nearest keyframe before your start handle, which is usually within a second or two.
Which formats are supported?
Video trimming takes anything FFmpeg can read and returns the same container, with MP4, WebM and MOV the safe choices; the in-page preview depends on your browser's codecs. Audio trimming is intended for MP3 files and saves as MP3.
Are my videos uploaded?
No. The FFmpeg engine is downloaded from a CDN, but your file is read and cut on your device and is never sent anywhere.
