Turn a video clip or a set of images into a GIF
From Video takes a clip in MP4, WebM, MOV or AVI, a start and end time in seconds, a frame rate of 5, 10 or 15 fps, and an output width from 64 to 1280 pixels (height follows the aspect ratio). Loop can be infinite or play once. From Images takes two or more pictures, lets you reorder or remove them, and plays them in sequence at a frame delay you set between 50 and 5000 milliseconds.
The settings that matter most for file size are width, frame rate and length. GIF stores each frame with at most 256 colours and no modern compression, so a 10-second, 480-pixel clip at 15 fps can comfortably pass several megabytes. Dropping to 10 fps, narrowing the width or shortening the range is usually a better trade than tolerating a GIF that stalls when it loads.
Conversion runs through FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. The engine is fetched from a CDN the first time you pick a file, which is why the Create GIF button shows "Preparing engine" briefly, and from then on the frames are read and the GIF is written entirely in your browser. The result previews in the page and downloads as a .gif.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my GIF so large?
GIF is an old format with no real compression and a 256-colour palette per frame. Reduce the width, drop the frame rate to 10 or 5, or shorten the clip; each of those cuts the size roughly in proportion.
Is there a length limit?
No fixed limit. The whole GIF is built in memory, so long or wide clips can exhaust it on a phone; a few seconds at 480 pixels is the comfortable range.
Can I make a GIF from screenshots or photos?
Yes. Switch to From Images, add two or more files, set the order and the delay between frames. Use images of the same dimensions for a clean result.
Does the GIF have sound?
No. The GIF format carries no audio, so the output is silent regardless of the source video.
Are my files uploaded?
No. The video or images are read on your device and the GIF is assembled there; only the FFmpeg engine is downloaded.
