Voices come from your operating system, so the list differs between devices. Nothing you type is uploaded — synthesis happens locally.

Have your browser read text aloud

Paste any text, pick a voice and press Speak. Voices come from your operating system and browser, grouped by language in the dropdown, with the system default marked. Speed runs from 0.5x to 2x, pitch from 0 to 2 and volume to 100%, and the stat cards show the word count plus an estimated length at the current speed, based on a speaking pace of about 150 words per minute.

Pause and Resume hold the place in the text; Stop cancels, and pressing Speak again restarts from the beginning with the current settings. Reading your own draft back is the use this is built for: an awkward sentence, a doubled word or a missing comma is far easier to hear than to see after the third read-through.

This uses the Web Speech API, so the page itself sends nothing anywhere and there is no account or quota. The voice list is whatever your device provides, which is why it differs between a Windows laptop, a Mac and an Android phone, and why some voices sound more natural than others. Most are synthesised on the device; a few browser-bundled voices are generated by the browser vendor's own service.

Frequently asked questions

Can I download the speech as an MP3?

No. The Web Speech API plays audio but does not expose it as a file, so this tool reads aloud only.

Why do I see so few voices, or none?

The list is whatever your operating system and browser have installed. Adding languages or voices in your system's speech settings makes them appear here, and some browsers populate the list a moment after the page loads.

Does it support languages other than English?

Yes, for any language you have a voice installed for. The dropdown is grouped by language code so you can pick one that matches the text.

Is my text uploaded?

The page sends nothing to a server. Most voices are synthesised on your device; a few browser-bundled voices, such as some of the Google voices in Chrome, are generated by the browser vendor's service.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes, in mobile browsers that support the Web Speech API, which includes current Safari on iOS and Chrome on Android.
