Remove PDF Password
Strip the open password and restrictions from a PDF you have the password for.
Unlock a PDF you already have the password for
Some PDFs ask for a password every time they open; others open freely but refuse to let you print, copy or edit. This tool removes both kinds of protection. Enter the password the file was issued with, and you get back the same document without the encryption, ready to open, share or merge like any other PDF. If the file only has owner restrictions, leave the password field empty.
It does not crack or recover passwords. If you have lost the password, the only route is the person or organisation that issued the file. What it does do is save you from typing a password every time you open a bank statement or a payslip you have already been given access to.
Decryption runs in your browser using qpdf compiled to WebAssembly. The protected PDF and its password are never sent to a server.
Frequently asked questions
Can it remove a password I do not know?
No. It needs the password that opens the file. It strips the encryption so the PDF opens freely afterwards, but it cannot guess or recover a lost password.
What about PDFs that open but will not let me print or copy?
Those have owner restrictions rather than an open password. Leave the password field empty and run the tool; the restrictions are removed.
Is the password or the file sent anywhere?
No. Both stay in your browser. The unlocking is done on your device with qpdf running in WebAssembly.
Will the unlocked PDF look different?
No. Only the encryption is removed; pages, text and images are returned unchanged.
